(or what to do with that old 486)

This website was originally installed on a SuSE based linux PC, it had the following specification:

  • Intel 486DX33
  • 16MB DRAM
  • 800MB Hard Disk
  • NE2000 compatible network card

The PC was purchased for UK 7 pounds (about USD 11) at a Radio Rally, it had 8MB DRAM and a 120MB hard disk installed. This PC was manufactured by Intel in Ireland and is extremely well built. It has an EISA bus (remember the industry response to IBMs Microchannel), onboard SCSI and Ethernet. Unfortunately I have been unable to get Linux to detect the SCSI or Ethernet hardware so have had to disable them and put an ISA network card in the machine. I also added a larger hard disk.

The costs worked out like this:

PC UKP 7.00
8MB DRAM (2x4MB) UKP 5.00
New Network card UKP 9.00
Total cost UKP 21.00
About USD 35.00

The cost could have been less if I had managed to get the on board Ethernet going. It appeared to use the 82502/82506 chipset.
